BOISE, Idaho — A 24-year-old soldier died July 3 in Afghanistan when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

Spc. Cody O. Moosman of Preston died in Gayan Alwara Mandi, the Army said in a statement.

Moosman had been assigned to an Army unit out of Fort Riley, Kan. He was with the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

Moosman’s family issued a statement saying their son told them starting in the third grade that he had wanted to be in the Army.

He joined in 2010, at age 22, and loved the idea of protecting his fellow citizens, they wrote, describing him as an avid hunter and fisherman who had completed his Eagle Scout badge in the Boy Scouts.

“Our family enjoyed watching him stand up for America,” they wrote, asking for privacy as they grieved. “He leaves behind his mother and father, two brothers and two sisters, his grandparents and his nieces and nephews who all very much adored him. We loved him, and we will miss him very much.”

Moosman’s unit was deployed in a restive region near the border with Pakistan.

LOGAN, Utah — The remains of an Idaho soldier killed in Afghanistan have been returned to his family.

The body of Army Spc. Cody Moosman was flown into the Logan-Cache Airport on Wednesday.

Police Chief Val Sparrow, from Preston, Idaho, was among a large law enforcement presence at the ceremony.
Sparrow says it was a "solemn and fitting tribute."

The Herald Journal of Logan reports a small crowd gathered as the white charter plane taxied down the runway. Two crew members then unloaded the American flag-draped casket to a waiting hearse. A funeral is set for Friday in Preston.

Officials say the 24-year-old was killed in Afghanistan on July 3. Moosman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, in Fort Riley, Kan.

Preston OKs plan to memorialize fallen soldier

The Associated Press

LOGAN, Utah  — City leaders in Preston have approved plans for a small memorial honoring a southern Idaho soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The Herald Journal of Logan reports that a granite bench and a lighted flagpole inside City Park will honor Cody Moosman.

The 24-year-old Army specialist was killed in Afghanistan on July 3. He graduated from Franklin County High School and joined the military in May 2010.

He was assigned to a battalion based in Fort Riley, Kan.

Preston Mayor Lee Hendrickson told the newspaper he's supporting the memorial but didn't provide an official timeline for constructing it.

He said the bench design will accommodate other names and said he wants to make sure families of other fallen veterans don't feel left out of city memorials.
