Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Matthew I. Holzemer

Died June 17, 2018 Serving During U.S. Africa Command Operations


35 , of Tennessee, died June 17 at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, due to a non-combat related incident. The death is under investigation. Holzemer was deployed to Djibouti in support of Special Operations Command Forward - East Africa. His awards include a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal and Humanitarian Service Medal, among others.

The Defense Department on Tuesday announced that a sailor based in Africa died over the weekend.

Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Matthew I. Holzemer, died June 17, 2018, at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, due to a “non-combat related incident,” the Pentagon said in a release.

Holzemer, who originally hailed from Tennessee, was deployed to Djibouti in support of Special Operations Command Forward - East Africa, according to the release.

More details, including the cause of death, were not immediately available from Pentagon or Navy officials.

The death is under investigation.
