Drum soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT DRUM, N.Y. — The Defense Department says a soldier assigned to the Army's 10th Mountain Division based in northern New York has been killed in Afghanistan.

Pentagon officials announced Monday night that 28-year-old Spc. Javier Sanchez Jr. of Greenfield, Calif., died Sunday in Sar Rowzah, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device while on mounted patrol.

Sanchez was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Drum. He joined the Army in August 2006 and arrived at Fort Drum five years later. Sanchez was deployed to Iraq twice and began his Afghanistan tour in January.

He is survived by his wife, parents, sister and brother.
