Dania Beach soldier remembered as being ‘too good to be true’

MIAMI — A Dania Beach paratrooper killed in Afghanistan earlier this week was described by relatives as always looking out for others — whether his siblings or soldiers.

Army 1st Sgt. Michael S. Curry Jr., 37, was among four members of the Vicenza, Italy-based 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, who died July 23 after a bomb exploded near their vehicle in Sarobi, a town east of Kabul.

“He was so wonderful, like something that is too good to be true,” said Curry’s sister, Niki Martin.

Curry would give his two sisters an allowance from the money he earned working at a Winn-Dixie supermarket, after setting most of it aside for savings.

“I was so proud of him,” said Keisha Robinson, his older sister. “If wrong was going left, he was always going right.”

The father of two enlisted in the Army immediately after graduating from Hollywood Hills High School in 1987.

Curry was based in Italy for most of his career. He fought in the Gulf War and was part of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, where he served for 14 months. He reported for duty in Afghanistan last year.

“He made it his life,” said his uncle, Volusia County Circuit Judge Hubert Grimes.

A soldier who served under Curry said he was “always looking out for his men, more so than himself,” Grimes said. “Even though he knew the dangers, he continued to serve and do everything he could.”

Curry was the “true flag bearer of our extended family from Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta,” Grimes said.

Curry is also survived by his wife, Lucia, and their sons, Taylor, 12, and Kevin, 9.
