CHICAGO — Two soldiers from northern Illinois were killed in separate incidents in Baghdad, the Department of Defense said Sept. 7.
Pvt. Randol Shelton of the Chicago suburb of Schiller Park died Sept. 4 from wounds inflicted by an improvised explosive device, the Defense Department said in a statement.
The 22-year-old died along with two other soldiers assigned to Fort Riley, Kan, officials said. There was no listing for Randol Shelton in Schiller Park.
Spc. Keith Nurnberg, 26, of McHenry died Sept. 5 when insurgents attacked his unit during combat. He was assigned to Fort Benning, Ga., the defense department said.
Nurnberg graduated from McHenry West High School in 1999. His mother, Barb Nurnberg, said her son was “proud to be a soldier.”
“He was very proud of what he was doing over there [in Iraq],” she said.
Nurnberg’s wife, Tonya, is expecting the couple’s first child in November. Family members said the child, a boy, will be named after his father.
The Nurnbergs lived in Genoa City, Wis., after marrying in December.
