FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A soldier from Fort Wayne died of non-combat related injuries in Iraq, the military said April 18.
Army Pfc. Richard P. Langenbrunner, 19, of Fort Wayne, died April 17 in Rustamiyah, Iraq, military officials said. His death is being investigated by the Defense Department.
Langenbrunner, a 2006 Northrop High School graduate, completed basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky., in January.
He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Benning, Ga.
Kris Kallmeyer, who had Langenbrunner in German class for two years at Northrop High School, said he was shocked to hear the news but remembered bumping into him his senior year in the hallway.
“He was so happy,” Kallmeyer told The News-Sentinel. “I asked him what he was going to do. He said he was joining the Army. He seemed really excited. He wanted to drive a tanker.”
Langenbrunner was the seventh person from Indiana to have died in Iraq in the past three weeks. In all, 79 people from Indiana have died after being sent to the Middle East since the buildup for the invasion of Iraq began in 2003.
