FORT LEWIS, Wash. — A Stryker brigade soldier died in Iraq when his unit was hit with enemy fire, the Pentagon said May 26.
Sgt. Iosiwo Uruo, 27, of Agana Heights, Guam, died May 24 when his unit encountered small-arms enemy fire in Buhriz, about 40 miles north of Baghdad and just south of Baqouba.
Uruo was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. He joined the Army in January 2001 as a cavalry scout. He served at Fort Knox, Ky., and Camp Casey, Korea, and was most recently based at Fort Lewis, Wash.
His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, Korean Defense Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Uruo’s father told the Pacific Daily News of Guam that his son joined the Army shortly after high school. Isaoshy Uruo said he wanted his son to go to college because he was good in architecture.
“He told me, ‘Dad, I’m sorry, but I want to join the service,’ ” Isaoshy Uruo told the newspaper.
Iosiwo Uruo had not returned to his home island for about two years. He last spoke with his family late last year while in Kuwait, his father said.
Fifteen soldiers based at Fort Lewis have died in May, making it the deadliest month of the Iraq war for troops from this Army post south of Tacoma.
