Army Sgt. Kyle B. McClain

Died August 1, 2012 Serving During Operation Enduring Freedom


25, of Rochester Hills, Mich.; assigned to 507th Engineer Battalion, 177th Military Police Brigade, Michigan National Guard, Kalamazoo, Mich; died Aug. 1 in Salim Aka, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by an improvised explosive device.

Flags lowered for soldier killed in Afghanistan

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff across Michigan for a 25-year-old Army National Guard soldier from suburban Detroit who was killed in combat in Afghanistan.

The order honoring Sgt. Kyle McClain of Macomb County's Shelby Township is for Thursday.

Authorities say McClain died Aug. 1 when an improvised explosive device went off in Salim Aka, Afghanistan. He was part of an engineering company based in Kalamazoo, and four other unit members were seriously hurt in the blast. McClain was promoted to sergeant on the day of his death.

His funeral is Thursday at St. Mary of the Hills Catholic Church in Rochester Hills. McClain is expected to be buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.


Mother, wife speak of soldier killed in Afghanistan

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. — The mother and the wife of 25-year-old Army National Guard Sgt. Kyle McClain say the soldier killed in Afghanistan was a dedicated family man and friend, as well as a committed soldier.

His mother, Geraldine McClain, and his wife, Lisa McClain, spoke Thursday at his funeral at St. Mary of the Hills Catholic Church in Rochester Hills.

The man from Macomb County’s Shelby Township is being buried at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. He received a posthumous promotion.

Major Gen. Gregory Vadnais said a fellow soldier described McClain as “mature beyond his years” but also a fun-loving prankster.
