Oregon soldier dies from gunshot wound in Afghanistan
PORTLAND, Ore. — Sgt. Long N. Nguyen, an Oregon National Guard soldier from Portland serving in Afghanistan, has died from a non-combat gunshot wound, the National Guard said Monday.
It said Nguyen, 27, died Feb. 10 in Mazar-e Sharif. He was assigned to the Tigard-based 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
The incident is under investigation. No further details were immediately available.
The unit arrived there last summer on a yearlong mission to help train Afghanistan’s army.
About 800 Oregon Army National Guard troops and about 80 airmen from the Oregon Air National Guard are in Afghanistan in the largest single deployment of Oregon troops since World War II.
According to a list kept by the Oregon governor’s office, at least 80 troops from Oregon or with close Oregon ties have died in Iraq or Afghanistan.
