NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A funeral is planned in Oak Ridge for an Army soldier who was killed in Afghanistan in an attack that killed five Americans, including an American diplomat and a Defense Department civilian worker.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Michael Ward, of Oak Ridge, was among those killed Saturday in a suicide car bombing while delivering textbooks to children in Zabul, Afghanistan.

Ward served as a cavalry scout in the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga.

A news release from the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs says Ward's remains will be arriving at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base on Friday. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge and a funeral service will begin immediately after the visitation.
