28, of Meridian, N.Y.; assigned to the 1st Bn, 36th Inf, 1st BCT, 1st Armored Div, Fort Bliss, Texas; died May 4, in Maiwand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device. Also killed were 1st Lt. Brandon J. Landrum of Lawton, Okla.; Spc. Kevin Cardoza of Mercedes, Texas; Spc. Thomas P. Murach of Meridian, Idaho; and Spc. Brandon J. Prescott of Bend, Ore.
Memorial set at Fort Bliss for 5 bombing victims

FORT BLISS, Texas — A memorial service will be held this month at a West Texas post for five soldiers killed in a bombing in Afghanistan.
Officials at Fort Bliss say a service has been scheduled May 22 at the post chapel.
The five Fort Bliss soldiers died May 4 in Maiwand, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when an improvised bomb damaged their vehicle.
The victims were 1st Lt. Brandon J. Landrum of Lawton, Okla.; Staff Sgt. Francis G. Phillips IV of Meridian, N.Y.; Spc. Kevin Cardoza of Mercedes, Texas; Spc. Thomas P. Murach of Meridian, Idaho; and Spc. Brandon J. Prescott of Bend, Ore.
All were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss.
Funeral held for soldier killed in Afghanistan

MERIDIAN, N.Y. — Relatives and friends gathered for the funeral for a soldier from New York's Finger Lakes region killed in Afghanistan.
The ceremony for 28-year-old Army Staff Sgt. Francis Gene Phillips IV was held Thursday at Auburn United Methodist Church.
According to the Citizen of Auburn, uniformed soldiers carried the casket to the altar while an organ played "Amazing Grace." At the funeral's close, a senior Army official presented an American flag to the late soldier's grieving mother.
Phillips will be buried Monday at Arlington National Cemetery.
The Meridian resident was killed May 4 along with four other 1st Armored Division soldiers when they were hit by a roadside bomb blast in southern Afghanistan.
