29, of Bartlett, Tenn.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Mississippi National Guard, Jackson, Miss.; died July 28, in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds caused by small-arms fire in Sarobi district, Afghanistan.
Soldier to receive Fallen Heroes Medal

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- State officials say a Bartlett soldier killed in Afghanistan will receive the Tennessee Fallen Heroes Medal.
Gov. Bill Haslam and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder said Tuesday that Stephen Michael New also will receive the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Mississippi Medal for Valor and several other service-related awards.
New was fatally shot July 28 during an attack on his unit in the Sarobi District of Kabul Province.
New was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Jackson, Miss.
The 29-year-old soldier grew up in Memphis and graduated from Bolton High School in Arlington in 2003.
New's remains are expected to arrive Wednesday at Millington Regional Jetport.
