PASCAGOULA, Miss. — The sisters of Army Staff Sgt. Terrence Dunn said he was a hero long before a roadside bomb killed him Feb. 2 in Baghdad.

The 38-year-old graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1987, where he was a member of the school’s ROTC program. He entered the Army three years later and served tours in Bosnia, Africa, Korea and was in the middle of his second tour of duty in Iraq.

“He was very brave, very honorable,” his sister, Sharon Dunn, told The Mississippi Press by telephone from Houston last week. “He was a very humble person, a very quiet person, but he was someone who got things done.”

She remembered Dunn sending their mother one of the first photos of him in uniform with a note on the back.

“I’m a real soldier now, and I love it,” it read.

Rosemary Elder-Marsalis, another older sister, remembered the two of them going to movies together, shopping and taking long road trips because he loved to drive and travel.

She said Dunn was an adventurous person, always on the go and doing good deeds for others in the meantime.

“That’s just the kind of person he was,” Elder-Marsalis said.

Dunn, who left behind a wife of five years, Angela, but no children, was an avid sports fan.

“He said there wasn’t any other way to watch a game or wrestling match, and he was a wrestling fanatic. And he would always get him a floor seat or one on the front row,” Sharon Dunn said.

A military burial service for Dunn was held last weekend at Franklinton, La., where other relatives are buried.

Mary Murphy, who works at Gautier High School, was a library clerk at the old Pascagoula High School Annex in the 1980s when Dunn was a student.

Dunn’s death “hurt because he was a good fellow,” Murphy said.

“He was a well-behaved student, a wonderful personality and liked by everybody.”
