Funeral services set for MarSOC captain

Funeral services for a Marine captain killed Aug. 4 in Afghanistan have been scheduled for Thursday at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C., according to a report published Tuesday in the Beaufort Gazette.
Capt. Garrett T. Lawton, 31, an F/A-18D weapons systems operator assigned to Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, died of wounds sustained in an improvised explosive attack in Afghanistan’s Herat province.
Born in Beaufort in December 1976, Lawton lived in South Carolina until age 4, according to the Gazette. He grew up in Charleston, W.Va.
Lawton joined the Corps in 1996, pinning on his captain’s bars in 2004. He earned two Purple Hearts: one for the incident Aug. 4 and another in May for injuries sustained in another IED attack.
Survivors include his wife, Trisha, and two sons, Ryan, 6, and Caden, 4, according to the Gazette.
