Long Island Marine killed in Iraq

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. — A 23-year-old Marine from Long Island was among those killed in Iraq this week, according to the Department of Defense.

Marine Cpl. Kevin T. Kolm, of Hicksville, died Tuesday from hostile fire in Anbar province, the department said.

Kolm was assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A graduate of Hicksville High School, he was a third-generation Marine: his grandfather served in World War II and his father fought in Vietnam, Newsday reported Friday.

“My son was where he wanted to be, doing what Marines do,” his father, Thomas Kolm, told Newsday. “He was with his brothers, defending other Marines.”

Kevin Kolm worked as a carpenter and attended classes at Nassau Community College before joining the Marines four years ago. He had been in Iraq since March 20, and his father last spoke to him early Monday.

“He said ‘Dad, I just have a moment. Love you guys. Don’t know when I’ll be able to call back,”’ Thomas Kolm told Newsday. “Twenty-four hours later, he was dead.”

At least 88 U.S. soldiers, several more civilians and hundreds of Iraqis have died in Iraq this April.
