LOGAN, Utah — Family, friends and fellow Marines are remembering a 22-year-old infantryman killed in Afghanistan as a good soldier and father to two young children.
The Logan Herald Journal reports that relatives of Lance Cpl. Norberto Mendez-Hernandez held a solemn memorial at Cache County Courthouse on Sunday.
The mother of another Marine who died in 2004 gave Mendez-Hernandez’ mother a gold-star flag to symbolize unity between mothers of fallen military personnel.
Mendez-Hernandez died July 10 while conducting combat operations in the Helmand province in southwest Afghanistan. He had enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 2010. This was his first combat deployment.
He was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif.
