NEW CASTLE, Ind. — The parents of a Marine from east-central Indiana say he was killed in Iraq on Nov. 12 when a roadside bomb exploded under the military vehicle he was riding in.

Lance Cpl. Scott Zubowski, 20, and another Marine died when the bomb exploded during combat operations near Fallujah in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, said his mother, Barbara Weitzel.

Zubowski was a rear passenger in the military vehicle when the bomb exploded, critically injuring a third Marine and slightly injuring two others, she said.

A Department of Defense spokeswoman said Nov. 14 she could not confirm Zubowski’s death.

Barbara Weitzel said she and her husband last spoke to Scott about two weeks ago.

“He was the same wonderful kid he always was,” she told The Courier-Times on Monday morning. “He was just a great kid.”

Zubowski was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. His first tour ran from February to October of 2004. He returned to Iraq in July.

His brother, David, is also serving in Iraq and is expected to return home for the funeral.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Zubowski is the 49th person from Indiana to have died after being sent to the Middle East since the buildup for the invasion of Iraq began in 2003.

NEW CASTLE, Ind. — A public memorial service will be held this week for an Indiana soldier who died in Iraq.

The service for Lance Cpl. Scott Zubowski is scheduled for Dec. 1 at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in New Castle. His mother, Barbara Weitzel, lives in the city, about 40 miles east of Indianapolis.

Zubowski, 20, of North Manchester, and another Marine died when a roadside bomb exploded during combat operations near Fallujah in Iraq’s Al Anbar province Nov. 12, the military said.

He was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.

“There’s a sense of pride for all of us to claim him as our own,” said Sam Hall of Macer-Hall Funeral Home, one of the event’s organizers.

“The statistics of the war become real for us now. They’re not just numbers any more.”

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will present a gold star flag and the Knightstown American Legion will add a memorial brick to a memorial on the town square.

Zubowski is the 49th Hoosier soldier to die in the Middle East since the buildup for the invasion of Iraq began in 2003.

About 200 people attended Zubowski’s funeral Nov. 21 in North Manchester, 35 miles west of Fort Wayne.
