BURNEY, Calif. — The body of a Marine who was killed in Afghanistan last week is heading home to Shasta County.
A jet carrying the body of Lance Cpl. Tyler Allen Roads is due to arrive in Redding on July 16, then will be driven to his hometown of Burney.
The 20-year-old was killed July 10 in the Helmand province while supporting combat operations with 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The Defense Department says his death remains under investigation.
Family and friends described Roads as a considerate young man with a strong sense of responsibility. A former teacher says Roads knew he wanted to join the Marines even before graduating Burney’s Mountain View High School in 2007.
Family members are planning a funeral for July 17.
